OUTSPOKEN is a movement — with a powerful documentary film at its core — to inspire change and visibility for rural LGBTQ communities.

Powered by local communities in Appalachia and the South, this grassroots campaign celebrates the unique lives of LGBTQ people in rural America while sparking important conversation about the future of human rights.

Bring this movement to your community during LGBTQ History Month!

Why host a community screening?

Unlike passively watching a film alone at home, hosting a community screening of a documentary film, with the filmmaker and participants present, is a very unique and memorable experience. Attendees always feel inspired to share their stories with the audience.

We want to empower communities to engage in LGBTQ storytelling. By hosting a screening of OUTSPOKEN during LGBTQ History Month, your organization will be validating the voices and experiences of the LGBTQ community and their allies.

At a decisive moment in the industrial city of Parkersburg, residents decide to fight back after their city government voted down an ordinance to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination. OUTSPOKEN calls us to reimagine the power of LGBTQ people in small town America.

Goals of the LGBTQ History Month OUTSPOKEN Tour

  1. Create a celebratory, inclusive, and welcoming event for the LGBT community, allies, and screening guests

  2. Hold a safe space for a post-screening discussion and story-sharing where everyone feels supported in sharing their own triumphs and challenges as inspired by those in the film.

  3. Showcase the work of the host organization as a space where all are welcome and engage other local community partners.
